Malaysians Flocking to Singapore for Work, with 85% Earning Between S$1,500 and S$9,999 Monthly
The recent surge in the Singapore dollar against the Malaysian ringgit has led to an increase in Malaysians seeking employment opportunities in Singapore. According to a recent survey by the Malaysian Statistics Department, 62% of Malaysian residents in Singapore are male, while 38% are female.
The survey also revealed that 48% of Malaysian residents in Singapore are between 25 and 39 years old, while 32% are above 40 years old. This suggests that most Malaysians in Singapore are of working age.
Interestingly, the survey found that only 38% of Malaysian residents in Singapore are working, while the remaining 62% are in Singapore for other reasons such as business, education, or marriage to a Singaporean.
The survey also provided insights into the demographics of Malaysian residents in Singapore. For instance, 46.2% of them are of Chinese ethnicity, while 40.2% are Malay, and 11.3% are Indian.
In terms of their place of origin, 38.3% of Malaysian residents in Singapore come from Johor, followed by 12.3% from Kedah, and 9% from Perak.
The survey’s findings have shed light on the lives of Malaysian residents in Singapore, who are often referred to as “familiar strangers” by Singaporeans. With the recent increase in the Singapore dollar’s value against the Malaysian ringgit, it is likely that more Malaysians will be drawn to Singapore for work and other opportunities.
As the two countries continue to strengthen their economic ties, it is essential for Singaporeans to better understand their Malaysian counterparts and the reasons behind their decision to work and live in Singapore.
