In a shocking case from Penang, the parents of a 12-year-old girl, who was reportedly abused and confined in a dog cage, have been charged and pleaded not guilty. The father, Zhao Guo Wan (47 years old, phonetic), and the mother, Mai Wei Ping (49 years old, phonetic), were each granted bail of RM10,000 after their court appearance.

The couple was charged under Section 3(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for abusing their daughter, which resulted in physical harm. The alleged incident occurred on May 18 at their apartment in the Southwest District, where the parents were accused of mistreating the girl as her guardians.

If convicted, they could face imprisonment of up to 20 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both.

According to a statement from Southwest District Police Chief Shazali, the victim revealed that she was beaten with a rattan stick for hiding food in a wardrobe.
