Malaysian Professor Raises Theory That Kedah’s Ancient Iron May Have Come From Meteorites

A Malaysian academic has sparked another round of online discussion after raising the possibility that some of Kedah’s ancient iron resources could be linked to meteor activity.

Prof Dr Solehah Yaacob of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) recently shared a discussion titled “Besi Dari Langit | Mengapa Kedah Kaya Dengan Besi?” — or “Iron From The Sky | Why Is Kedah Rich In Iron?” — in which she explored possible links between Kedah’s geography, iron resources and events that may have taken place thousands of years ago.

Rather than presenting the meteorite theory as an established fact, Solehah posed a series of questions about the origins of iron found around the Sungai Batu archaeological area. Her discussion also touched on the geography surrounding Gunung Jerai and whether possible meteor activity could have played a role.

The theory has attracted attention partly because of Solehah’s previous comments on ancient Malay civilisation, which have also generated considerable debate online.

Questions Raised About Kedah’s Iron Resources

In her latest discussion, Solehah examined why Kedah possesses substantial iron resources and whether geological events could help explain the distribution of these materials.

Among the questions she raised was whether meteor activity could be associated with iron deposits in the region. She also discussed differences in the terrain between Kedah and sections of the Titiwangsa Range, suggesting that the landscape could provide clues about the area’s geological history.

Solehah additionally brought Gunung Jerai into the discussion, referring to the possibility of meteor impacts in the wider area. However, the claims presented in her discussion do not establish that Gunung Jerai is a confirmed ancient meteor impact site.

Likewise, there is currently no established evidence presented in the discussion proving that Kedah’s naturally occurring iron ore originated from meteorites. The idea therefore remains a hypothesis for further consideration rather than a confirmed scientific explanation.

Ancient Kedah Was Already Known For Iron Production

There is, however, substantial archaeological evidence that ancient Kedah was an important centre of iron production.

Excavations at the Sungai Batu Archaeological Complex have uncovered furnaces, iron slag, iron ore and other remains associated with ancient ironworking. These discoveries indicate that iron smelting was carried out on a significant scale in the region.

Research examining iron ore associated with Sungai Batu has identified minerals including hematite, magnetite and goethite. Studies have also compared archaeological material with natural iron ore sources found around the area.

According to the research cited in the original report, some of the natural sources appear to have been located approximately 1km to 11km from Sungai Batu. This supports the view that ancient communities had access to locally available raw materials for iron production.

The existing archaeological evidence, however, does not demonstrate that these iron resources came from meteorites.

Professor Previously Sparked Debate Over Ancient History

Solehah’s latest comments have attracted additional attention because she has previously made controversial claims about the history of the Malay world.

In 2025, she drew widespread attention after suggesting that ancient Romans may have learned aspects of shipbuilding from people in the Malay Archipelago. The claim prompted discussion about historical evidence and the interpretation of ancient sources.

She subsequently characterised the argument as a research hypothesis based partly on classical Arabic sources.

IIUM later clarified that statements made by Solehah were made in her personal capacity and did not represent the university’s official position. The university also emphasised the importance of supporting public academic claims with credible research and evidence.

A Theory Still Open To Scientific Scrutiny

Solehah’s latest discussion appears to be broader than simply asking where Kedah’s iron originated. She also connected natural resources, geography and technological development with the rise of ancient civilisations.

The Sungai Batu discoveries have already provided important evidence about the sophistication of iron production in ancient Kedah. The possibility of an additional geological explanation for the region’s iron resources would require further investigation involving archaeology, geology and materials science.

For now, the evidence supports the existence of a major ancient iron industry in Kedah, while the suggestion that meteorites contributed to the region’s iron resources remains an unproven hypothesis.

Further geological research and analysis of iron deposits would be needed to determine whether there is any measurable connection between meteorite material and Kedah’s ancient iron industry.
