A 47-year-old Malaysian woman accused of misappropriating a large sum of company funds broke down emotionally during a recent court appearance, where she reportedly cried and nearly collapsed while facing multiple criminal charges.
The woman, identified as Lee Li Ping (name transliterated), had been working as a financial assistant at a company when she allegedly misused substantial amounts of money entrusted to her. Prosecutors said the total amount involved in the case was approximately RM670,000, which is roughly equivalent to S$216,000.
During proceedings in court, Lee appeared visibly distressed as the charges were read out. She later pleaded guilty to all four counts of criminal breach of trust brought against her.
Authorities subsequently granted her bail totalling RM38,000, which is approximately S$12,200.
Large Amount Allegedly Taken From Employer
According to the first charge presented in court, Lee allegedly misappropriated RM219,885 (around S$70,950) between Jan. 13, 2020 and Apr. 5, 2020 while working in her role as a financial assistant.
During the bail application, Lee tearfully addressed the court, explaining that she was a single mother raising two teenage children aged 17 and 18. She told the judge that she hoped to resolve the matter through an out-of-court settlement with her employer.
Lee indicated that she intended to repay the money owed to the company as part of the proposed settlement. After hearing the submission, the judge granted her bail set at RM8,000, which is roughly S$2,580.
Courtroom Scene Turns Dramatic
Shortly after the first hearing concluded, Lee reportedly struggled physically while being escorted to a second courtroom for the remaining charges. According to reports, her legs appeared to give way as she walked, causing her to nearly collapse.
Court officers quickly stepped in to assist her. She was helped to a nearby chair where she rested briefly before the proceedings continued.
Despite the dramatic moment, Lee later entered the courtroom and proceeded to face three additional charges related to the alleged misuse of company funds over several years.
Multiple Charges Cover Several Years
The second charge accused Lee of misappropriating RM104,769 (approximately S$33,800) from the company between Jun. 16, 2017 and Dec. 8, 2017.
A third charge alleged that she misused RM131,044.50 (about S$42,285) between Jan. 8, 2018 and Dec. 13, 2018.
The final charge stated that Lee allegedly misappropriated RM221,931 (around S$71,600) between Jan. 25, 2019 and Dec. 27, 2019.
After pleading guilty to the additional charges, Lee requested bail once again. The prosecution initially proposed RM30,000 bail for each charge.
However, the judge eventually granted bail of RM10,000 (about S$3,220) for each of the three counts.
Serious Penalties If Convicted
Criminal breach of trust is considered a serious financial offence under Malaysian law. If convicted, Lee could face a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
The law also allows the court to impose additional penalties such as a financial fine as well as caning.
The court has scheduled the case for further hearings as the legal process continues. Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the alleged misappropriation and any potential repayment arrangements that may be proposed by the defendant.
