Woman Claims She Was Robbed While Relieving Herself By Roadside, Later Admits Story Was Fake
A 29-year-old woman in Miri, Sarawak is now under police investigation after allegedly lodging a false robbery report involving an unusual roadside incident.
The woman initially claimed she had been robbed at gunpoint while relieving herself by the roadside late at night, leading police to launch an armed gang robbery investigation.
However, investigators later discovered multiple inconsistencies in her statement, and the woman eventually admitted that the entire story had been fabricated.
Woman Claimed Armed Men Robbed Her By Roadside
According to Miri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, the woman filed a police report in the early hours of May 28.
In her report, she claimed the incident happened at around 10pm the night before near Miri Gospel Church.
The woman allegedly told police that she had stopped her vehicle by the roadside to answer nature’s call when four men in a four-wheel-drive vehicle suddenly appeared.
She claimed one of the suspects pointed a pistol at her before robbing her of several valuables, including a gold necklace, gold bracelet, gold ring, and RM350 cash.
The total alleged losses were estimated at around RM3,130, which is approximately S$900.
Police Became Suspicious During Investigation
Following the report, police reportedly opened investigations under laws relating to armed gang robbery.
However, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department soon noticed several “holes” in the woman’s account.
As investigations progressed, police gathered evidence that contradicted parts of her statement, raising suspicions about whether the robbery had actually taken place.
When confronted with the inconsistencies, the woman eventually admitted she had fabricated the story.
Police later found that the jewellery and cash she claimed were stolen were still in her possession.
Woman Now Faces Possible Jail Time
The woman is now being investigated under Section 182 of Malaysia’s Penal Code for intentionally providing false information to a public servant.
If convicted, she could face up to six months in jail, a fine of up to RM2,000 (around S$575), or both.
Police also reminded the public not to file false reports for personal gain or self-interest, as fake cases waste public resources and could affect genuine investigations.
Netizens React To Bizarre Incident
The unusual nature of the story quickly drew attention online, with many netizens reacting to both the bizarre claim and the eventual confession.
Some joked about how the fabricated story sounded like something out of a comedy sketch, while others criticised the woman for wasting police manpower and resources.
Others pointed out that filing a false police report is a serious offence regardless of the reason behind it, especially when it involves claims of armed robbery.
The incident has since become another reminder that making false reports can lead to real legal consequences, even if the original story sounds unbelievable from the start.
