My Caucasian friend arrived in Singapore for his holiday one day and he looked me up for dinner when he was here.
Asked me how come got no Singaporean ‘chickens’, he wanted to try one
I picked him up and as we drove through the streets, he commented that he noticed most of the ‘chickens’ working at Geylang were PRC, Thai or Vietnamese.
He was really curious as to why he could not find any Singaporean ‘chickens’. He said that he had tried before ‘chickens’ from many Asian countries, but had never had the chance to try a Singaporean one before.
I had never expected him to ask me such a question and I was not sure how to answer him because it is true that I had never really seen or know much about Singaporeans offering services.
In the end, I told him whatever I heard before from all the coffeeshop talk that it is still possible to find Singaporean ‘chickens’. They usually operate in discreet locations and you just have to have some contacts or connections to find them.
Most of them are willing to provide their services to both locals and foreigners but it is usually illegal and Singaporean ‘chickens’ usually charge much higher rates and it can go as high as in the thousands.
I told him that the price is not really worth it and if he really wanted some release he can just go to Geylang for it as the girls there go for frequent checks and they all take safety measures.
In the end, he went home feeling disappointed that he did not try the local cuisine here.
