My boyfriend works selling industrial equipment and is effectively the assistant manager at his branch.
He doesn’t have the official title, but his boss, Dave, has been phoning it in for 10 years because he’s retirement age, so my boyfriend ends up doing most of the management tasks like performance reviews, management reports, and inventory.
My boyfriend is a shoe-in for the manager position once Dave retires, and Dave has promised to put in a good word with corporate when he retires.
Within the last year or two, my boyfriend convinced Dave to hire women.
3 women have been hired, and all have quit within a year. Recently, the last woman who quit was given an exit interview where she reported to HR about an instance of Dave telling her to toughen up when she reported S-misconduct. HR met with Dave and the offender after this, and it was essentially all brushed off since she quit.
They’ve been having problems finding replacement staff. Dave usually does the hiring but has passed the task along to my BF since he’s going on vacation.
Dave, despite having acknowledged in the past that the girls hired did a great job with customers and organizing the store, instructed my boyfriend to not hire women because “women cause problems”. My boyfriend says he’ll hire whoever is the best fit for the job regardless of gender while Dave is away, but he won’t make any reports to HR about Dave’s discrimination, because he fears for his career if he’s a whistle blower.
I’ve asked if I can create an anonymous email to report to their HR, and my BF has asked me to do nothing because he is afraid it will get tracked back to him and destroy his livelihood. My boyfriend insists that the best thing to do is wait for Dave to retire, and that things will be very different when he is in charge.
I am enraged that nothing can be done. I have a Bachelor’s degree in management and human resources and every cell in my body is screaming about this injustice.
