My ex-PRC wife fought with HDB officer because she didn’t get the grant money. Bullet dodge level: Neo from The Matrix

Many years back, my then-fiancée (who was from PRC) and I decided to apply for a BTO. At the time of application, she hadn’t converted to a Singapore Citizen yet. So under the rules, it was a Citizen + Foreigner/PR core nucleus application.

Fast forward to the actual appointment at HDB Hub to finalize everything and get the grants disbursed. We are sitting there, looking all professional, dealing with this very polite HDB officer. The officer looks at the screen, clicks a few times, and says very smoothly:

“Okay Mr. Lim, because your spouse is not a Singapore Citizen at the time of application, the HDB housing grant will be fully disbursed into your CPF Ordinary Account only.”

The moment those words left the officer’s mouth, the temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero.

My ex turned her head so fast I thought her neck would snap. Her face went from “sweet loving fiancée” to “Godzilla ready to destroy Tokyo” in 0.5 seconds. She straight up started making an absolute scene right there at the counter.

In her loudest, most colorful mainland accent, she started shouting at the poor officer: “Why only him?! This is unfair! We are married! The money should be divided fifty-fifty! You Singapore government trying to cheat my money is it?!”

I was standing there dying of second-hand embarrassment. The whole HDB Hub floor went quiet. People from counter 12 to counter 40 were staring at us. I tried to pull her arm and whisper, “Eh, calm down, this is standard policy, it goes to the citizen first, we can settle at home…”

No hope. She shook me off and started arguing with the officer like she was trying to haggle for vegetables at a wet market. She was literally demanding that the officer override the system and transfer half the grant cash into her personal bank account. The poor HDB officer looked so done with life, probably thinking, “I don’t get paid enough to solve international domestic disputes at 10 AM on a Tuesday.”

The truth is there is a process for her to get the 50% share of the grant, but she so money driven brain unstill she not seeing the process and logic and emotion ki siao, Volcano explode.

She was so obsessed with the money, completely blind to how the system works. That day, I saw her true colors. It wasn’t about building a home; it was a financial transaction to her.

But you know what they say—there is a god. Not long after that legendary HDB meltdown, our relationship completely disintegrated because her money-minded attitude just got worse and worse. In the end, we got a divorce before the BTO could even finish building. The flat is gone, the application is cancelled, and yes, I had to pay some administrative penalties.

But honestly? Best money I have ever spent in my entire life. Every time I pass by an HDB flat now, I look up, take a deep breath of freedom, and thank my lucky stars. I didn’t just dodge a bullet, boys; I dodged a homing missile.

TL;DR: Ex-PRC wife screamed at HDB officer because the grant money went into my CPF. True colors shown, we divorced, BTO cancelled, and I am now living a peaceful, drama-free life. Huat ah!
