Myanmar Cook Jailed in Singapore for Molesting Drunk Man and Possessing Obscene Videos

A 26-year-old Myanmar national working as a cook at a Sengkang eatery has been sentenced to seven weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to molesting a man who was asleep and intoxicated on a shopping mall bench. The incident took place at Compass One in October 2024 during the early hours of the morning.

The offender, Aung Chue Marn, had just finished his shift at the restaurant when he came across a 29-year-old man, who was reportedly reeking of alcohol and vomit while sleeping on a bench. Instead of walking past, Aung molested the unconscious victim multiple times — initially touching him once, walking away, and then returning three more times to grope the man’s private parts, reported The Straits Times.

Victim Discovered Crime Only After Waking Up

The shocking acts only came to light when the victim woke up and realised his mobile phone was missing. He approached a security officer at the mall for help. The officer then reviewed CCTV footage and was stunned to discover that the victim had been sexually assaulted while unconscious.

Court documents did not specify the outcome of the missing phone, but the focus quickly shifted to the CCTV evidence showing the repeated molestation.

Secret Toilet Recordings Discovered

When Aung was arrested on 10 October 2024, police seized his mobile phone as part of investigations. What they uncovered further horrified the authorities. His device contained 149 video clips of unknown male victims being filmed using toilets in the same shopping mall.

These videos had been recorded without the knowledge or consent of the individuals, making them a serious breach of personal privacy and public decency. Aung was charged with possession of obscene films, a separate offence to the molestation charge.

Court’s Response and Sentence

In court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Karl Tan highlighted the disturbing nature of the crimes, pointing out that Aung had targeted a defenceless victim and returned multiple times to commit the same offence. The fact that the victim was inebriated and unconscious made the act even more reprehensible.

The court handed Aung a seven-week jail sentence for the molestation charge. His sentence for the obscene film charge was taken into consideration during sentencing, though further penalties could be pursued if authorities decide to proceed with additional charges later.

Reminder: Singapore’s Firm Stance on Public Decency

Singapore maintains strict laws against sexual offences and invasion of privacy, especially in public spaces such as shopping malls and toilets. The use of surveillance, both official and internal (like CCTV), plays a major role in bringing such offenders to justice.

Members of the public are reminded to report suspicious behaviour, especially in late-night or isolated areas, and to remain alert to their surroundings. Mall operators are also encouraged to maintain vigilance through regular CCTV monitoring and security patrols.
