The National Environment Agency (NEA) said yesterday (16 April) that the number of cases of Aedes mosquitoes breeding went up from 1,300 to 2,400 last month.
They revealed that more than 4,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported since the beginning of this year.
NEA’s deputy chief executive and director-general of public health, Chew Ming Fai, said during a National Dengue Prevention Campaign 2022 outreach event at Hoover Park Estate, that the total numbers are twice of where we were in the same period last year.
He described the trend as being “actually worrying”, as the typical dengue season is from June to October, and we are now only in April.
As of 14 April, there are 164 active clusters, with the largest clusters being located at Woodlands Drive, Woodlands Avenue 1, Bukit Timah, Bukit Batok and Holland.
A prevention campaign was implemented on 30 March by NEA to fight the sharp increase in dengue cases, with purple banners being put up in places with high populations of Aedes mosquitoes, in addition to the existing red, green and yellow banners already p[ut in place.
MP for Jurong GRC, Shawn Huang, visited residents of Hoover park Estate to raise awareness, and he said, “I think the only way is to collaborate and make sure that everyone does the mosquito prevention actions. That is the only way we can reverse the trend and keep everyone safe and healthy.”
