The Wall Street Journal reported on 21 December that Netflix will be cracking down on password sharing next year.
The latest development comes in the wake of Netflix losing a huge percentage of their subscribers earlier in the year.
The sharing of passwords by multiple users was identified by the streaming giant as a huge problem that contributed to their loss of subscribers back in 2019.
The company was hesitant to address the problem as they were reluctant to alienate their customers, and then the pandemic started which further halted their plans to crack down on the issue.
Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of this year, and co-chief executive Reed Hastings then decided to take action.
According to the company’s estimates, there are more than 100 million users sharing passwords with their family and friends, which could change when Netflix charges those who share accounts extra from next year onwards.
