When I think back to the moment my girlfriend revealed she was actually trans, my stomach still drops. It was the night we had just taken our relationship to the next level and slept together for the first time.
We had been together for a few months and had been taking things slowly as we got to know each other better. We were both looking for something serious and had made a pact, to be honest and open with each other if things were going to work.
At first, I was hesitant to take that step. I’d never dated someone who was trans before, and I was unsure of how to react. But I decided to take the plunge and just go for it.
The night we slept together was magical. We laughed and talked until the early hours of the morning. We felt so close and connected, I knew this was something special.
But that was something wrong, she said that we need to buy lub as she cannot get wet.
It was only when I was about to drift off to sleep that my girlfriend whispered to me that she was actually trans. She had been living as her true self for a few years and only ever shared this part of her life with a few close friends.
My heart stopped. I had been so caught up in the moment, I had forgotten that this person I was lying next to was different. I didn’t know how to respond.
But as I lay there, I had a moment of clarity. I realized that I had to accept her for who she was. I was in love with her, and that meant accepting her trans identity.
I told her that I loved her and that nothing she could say would change that. I hugged her tight, and we both fell asleep in each other’s arms.
The next day, I was still trying to process what had happened. I felt a little overwhelmed, We talked about what this meant for us and our relationship.
Although it was a lot to take in, I was more certain than ever that this was what I wanted.
My friends always joke that she looked like one but I did not expect her to really be one.
