Presidential candidate Ng Kok Song conceded defeat to President-elect Tharman Shanmugaratnam last night following the release of the sample count of the votes when Tharman was leading by 70% of the votes to Ng’s 16%.
Speaking to the press after that, Ng said that he received a phone call from Tharman who commended him for putting up a vigorous campaign, and Ng then responded by congratulating Tharman on a “magnificent victory”>
He said that his number one goal when running for the presidency was to ensure that the people of Singapore could have the right to vote in the presidential election, and he believes he has accomplished it.
Thanked all his supporters
He began by thanking the people of singaproe, about 400,000 of them who had voted for him.
Secondly, he also thanked the character referees and assenters who supported and vouched for him during his campaign, citing how they put their names behind his names and lifted him up from a “nobody to a somebody”.
Thirdly, he also showed his appreciation for his campaign staff, advisers, security officers, his “young social media warriors and car drivers for helping him with his campaign.
Fourthly, Ng also expressed his gratitude to his immediate family, their spouses, his grandchildren, his brothers and sisters who were led by his fourth brother Charles, and his nephew and nieces.
Fifth, Ng also thanked his dog Cotton and his cat Max for comforting him and being there for him always.
Sixth, he thanked his 45-year-old fiancee Sybil Lau, whom he said had sacrificed her private life to stand by him.
Lastly, He also thanked his father-in-law, who was also a source of support and encourage through his quiet presence during his walkabout.
