Why do I feel that NSFs and Regulars are not being appreciated in SG compared to other countries?
So speaking from my Ns experience, I know that in other countries like US, people will say thanks for your service and show their appreciation when you are wearing a uniform in public.
They will offer you seat in subways or sometimes put the bill on the house when you went out to eat and didn’t bring enough money. Like u feel sort of appreciated and respected for the service to the country even though its small gesture.
But in SG, when you book out after a long training and sit on mrt and bus some people especially boomers expect you to stand all the way because you are a soldier and when you talk to people about signing on they will tend to say most people sign on because they can’t find good jobs outside or something like that.
This sort of reduce the morals. And in camps, some people will change into civilian clothes when booking out instead of wearing the uniform proudly because they don’t want to wear an army uniform or something like that. I feel that this is sort of wrong as you are serving your country and you should be appreciated.
Any thoughts?

- Because sinkies have never experienced war. The day they get saved by them is when they will start respecting them.
- Got difference between conscripts who never fought in combat Vs soldiers who actually risked their lives.
- In China, there are dedicated lanes in airports & high speed rail stations for soldiers to use (e.g. to travel home or travel to camp for training). There are also discounts at tourist attractions for soldiers and their family members.
- Because many of us do NS also. What’s there to thank you merely for doing your duty? Other country, its voluntary so people are grateful.
- Respect? You serve NS, other people also serve NS…
- Why not you start first. Initiate the trend by saluting and greeting out loud towards any uniformed personnel, make sure to also verbally thank them for their service.
- Next time you take MRT, just shout MRT DIAM! then ask the NSF for permission to carry on lor.
