NTU STUDENT CHARGED WITH TRAFFICKING CANNABIS ON CAMPUS, STANDBY GO IN SQUAT

A 25-year-old undergraduate from Nanyang Technological University, Muhammad Izzat Mazlan, was charged on 5 December with trafficking cannabis on campus back in October 2022, according to Channel NewsAsia.

The Allegations Against Muhammad Izzat Mazlan

He is being charged with trafficking about 4 blocks of cannabis that weighed about 101.59 grams in the vicinity of the carpark at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NTU on 20 October last year at about 6.45pm in the evening.

He is facing 8 charges relating to drug offences, all allegedly being committed on the same date.

Following the alleged incident at NTU, Izzat is reported to have gone to a housing block in Pasir Ris Drive 3, where he supposedly committed additional drug offenses around 9.27 pm on the same day.

The charges include trafficking five blocks of cannabis, possession of Ecstasy tablets, cannabinol derivative, and stamps containing Lysergide (LSD).

NTU’s Response and Stance

A spokesperson for NTU stated that students found guilty of criminal activities would be subject to disciplinary proceedings.

The spokesperson emphasized that NTU takes a serious view of such conduct, indicating the importance the university places on maintaining a safe and lawful environment for its students.

Izzat’s Next Court Hearing and Potential Convictions

Izzat’s next court appearance is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on December 19. If convicted, he could face severe penalties under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The charges for trafficking cannabis alone carry a minimum punishment of five years’ imprisonment with five strokes of the cane, escalating to a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment with 15 strokes of the cane.
