MUIS, Singapore’s Islamic Religious Council has said that Muslim women wearing the tudung are allowed to make adjustments to their attire whenever it is necessary to comply with workplace dress codes.
This was announced recently as after 1 Nov 2021, muslim nurses are allowed to don the tudung headgear if they wish.
However, they will have to comply with the hospital’s policy of being ‘bare below elbows’.
This is because the forearms of nurses and doctors giving care to patients must be kept bare to prevent the risk of infection for the patients and the caregivers.
MUIS said that even though the tudung donned by Muslim women cover them from the wrists up, the need to prevent endangering people from risks and harm supersedes and it is emphasised by Muslim Law.
