ONG YE KUNG: 2ND STAGE OF THOMSON-EAST COAST LINE TO OPEN IN EARLY 2021

Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung said on September 4 that the completion of the second stage of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) will be delayed by three months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was originally scheduled to open by this year.

The TEL’s second phase consists of six stations from, Springleaf to Caldecott, with interchange stations at Bright Hill and Caldecott.

Ong also noted that the time lost to the Covid-19 pandemic will be made up for.

He added that TEL2 was “near completion and prioritised for resumption of work”, and that the government “remains committed to significantly expand the MRT network from the current 230kkm to 360km by the start of the next decade in the 2030s.

The first stage of the TEL (Woodlands North, Woodlands and Woodlands South MRT stations) opened their doors and became operational on January 31 earlier this year.

The second stage of the TEl is about 90 percent complete, according to theh Land Transport Authority.

The entire TEL line comprises of 32 stations that serve 8 interchange stations, and it was expected to be fully operational by 2024, serving about 500,000 commuters daily to about 1 million passengers in the long run.
