OVER 6,000 CARTONS OF DUTY UNPAID CIGARETTES SEIZED

Earlier today the Singapore Customs posted on Facebook of a man getting handcuffed with a large number of cigarettes in front of him.

Singapore Customs reports that there are at least 6,004 cartons of cigarettes.

The amount of duty-unpaid cigarettes seized easily amounts to over SGD$500,000 in duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the evaded tax amount.

Buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, having in possession or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the GST Act.

Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to six years. Vehicles used in the commission of such offences are also liable to be forfeited.
