A 77-year-old petrol station attendant tragically lost his life after being struck by a reversing vehicle while attempting to refuel it at a station located in Geylang. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of June 28, left the elderly worker seriously injured. Despite receiving medical care at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for nearly two weeks, he succumbed to his injuries on July 8.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the elderly man had walked over to assist a driver who had pulled up at an empty pump around 2:20am. However, the car suddenly reversed and hit him before he could begin the refuelling process, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Eyewitness: Driver Was on the Phone and in a Hurry

Employees present at the scene recounted that the attendant was conscious and able to move after being hit. The car involved displayed a P-plate, which indicates the driver had less than a year of driving experience. One witness said the driver appeared flustered and was using his phone at the time of the accident.

A notice appealing for eyewitnesses was later put up at the station. Police have confirmed that a 24-year-old male driver has been arrested in connection with the case. Investigations are still ongoing.

P-plate drivers are often less experienced and considered higher risk on the road, raising questions about the adequacy of their training and supervision during the probationary period.

Remembering a Friendly and Devoted Worker

The late attendant had worked at the Esso petrol station for approximately two years and was known among his colleagues as a warm, helpful, and enthusiastic individual. A staff member from Cheers, the convenience store located within the station, described him as someone who always greeted others with a smile and kind words at the end of each shift.

A spokesperson from FairPrice Group, which owns Cheers, expressed condolences to the attendant’s family and affirmed their commitment to supporting them through this difficult period. They are currently in contact with the family and are offering assistance where needed.

Safety Concerns and the Call for Tighter Regulations

This heartbreaking accident has reignited discussions about safety protocols at petrol stations, especially those operating late at night. Questions have also been raised about whether more stringent regulations should be placed on probationary drivers when operating vehicles in confined or high-risk areas like fuelling stations.

With Singapore’s ageing workforce and more seniors remaining active in frontline service roles, workplace safety must remain a top priority — not only for the public but for the vulnerable individuals working tirelessly to support their families.

This incident is a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance, responsible driving, and respect for those who serve on the ground. May the deceased rest in peace.
