Highway Pothole Allegedly Sends Motorcyclist Flying Off Flyover In Penang
A shocking accident in Penang has sparked outrage online after a motorcyclist was allegedly flung off an elevated road following a suspected collision with a pothole.
The terrifying incident happened along Lebuh Jenahak in Seberang Jaya at around 4.39pm on Thursday afternoon. CCTV footage from a nearby mosque later surfaced on social media, quickly going viral as many netizens expressed concern over the condition of the road.
According to witnesses and initial reports, the rider was travelling along the flyover when his motorcycle suddenly lost control and overturned. The impact reportedly threw the rider over the side of the elevated road before he landed on a grass patch below.
The accident has once again raised questions about road safety and highway maintenance in Malaysia, especially involving damaged road surfaces that may pose serious dangers to motorists and motorcyclists.
Large Crowd Online Reacts To Viral CCTV Footage
Footage of the accident was reportedly captured by a CCTV camera installed at the nearby Al Muhajirin Mosque in Seberang Jaya. The video spread rapidly across Facebook and other social media platforms, with many users shocked by the severity of the crash.
In the clip, the rider could be seen travelling normally before the motorcycle allegedly hit a damaged section of the road surface. Moments later, the bike spun out of control while the rider was violently thrown into the air.
Several social media users claimed the pothole involved had already existed for some time and questioned why repairs had not been carried out earlier. Others said the incident highlighted the growing need for better road inspection and maintenance, particularly on elevated highways where accidents can easily turn fatal.
The rider reportedly suffered serious injuries, including fractures to his arm and thigh.
Victim Currently Receiving Treatment In Hospital
Seberang Jaya assemblyman Izhar Hashim later confirmed that the injured rider is a married man from Kedah who works for an airline company in Penang.
He said the victim is currently receiving treatment in the red zone of Seberang Jaya Hospital, where emergency medical teams are attending to his injuries.
According to information received by the assemblyman, the motorcycle is believed to have skidded after striking a pothole on the flyover, causing the rider to lose control before plunging off the elevated road.
Izhar also revealed that complaints regarding the poor road condition in the area had allegedly been raised previously with the Seberang Perai City Council. He stressed that authorities should not wait until serious injuries or fatal accidents occur before taking action.
He added that agencies responsible for road maintenance should carry out proactive inspections and repairs instead of depending solely on public complaints.
Calls Grow For Major Road Repair Works
The assemblyman further pointed out that nearby roads around Taman Pauh Jaya and Taman Pauh are also reportedly filled with potholes and damaged sections.
Although some parts have already undergone patching works, many damaged areas allegedly remain unrepaired. He believes temporary fixes may no longer be enough and suggested that a full resurfacing project should be considered for heavily affected stretches.
The incident has since reignited public discussions about infrastructure safety, road repair budgets, insurance claims, and accident compensation involving damaged roads.
Many online users are now calling for immediate action before another serious accident takes place.
