Speaking during the debate on the two motions related to the Committee of Privileges (COP) report, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that the former chief of the Workers’ Party (WP) “must be saddened” that “this is what his successor had done”.
The COP report was in relation to the lie that was told in parliament by former WP MP Raeesah Khan and it was released on 10 February.
It had recommended that Khan be fined $35,000 and for the current WP chief and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh to be referred to the public prosecutor for further investigations.
PM Lee described Low as being a “formidable political opponent” in his speech, but at the same time calling him a “patriotic Singaporean”.
Low is the longest-serving opposition MP in Singapore, and he stepped down as the secretary-general of the WP in 2019, having served a remarkable 29 years as an MP, of which he was the secretary-general of the WP for 17 years.
PM Lee added in his speech that the incident doesn’t have to be a setback for the democracy of Singapore, provided Singh and his colleagues take responsibility for “dishonoring” the parliamentary standards.
