Thai police shot a knife-wielding man after he allegedly stabbed an officer during a violent confrontation in Bangkok’s Suan Luang district, following reports that he had been chasing members of the public with a weapon.
The incident unfolded on Friday (Jul. 24), when officers from Khlong Tan Police Station responded to emergency calls about an armed man behaving aggressively in a public area.
According to police, the suspect also attempted to smash shop windows before officers arrived to contain the situation.
Officer stabbed before police open fire
Police said officers attempted to stop the man after locating him. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly stabbed one of the responding officers.
Faced with the immediate threat, police discharged their firearms, striking the man once in the abdomen and twice in the thigh.
Rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation provided first aid at the scene before transporting the suspect to hospital for further treatment.
The injured police officer was also taken to the Police General Hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s identity or nationality. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and police have yet to announce any potential charges.
Separate knife attack leaves Swedish man seriously injured
In an unrelated case, a 61-year-old Swedish man suffered severe head injuries after allegedly being attacked by his Thai uncle-in-law in Sisaket province.
The victim, identified only as Jimmy, later travelled to Bangkok to seek assistance from the non-profit organisation Saimai Survive, claiming the suspect remains at large despite a police report being filed.
Jimmy said the dispute began after he accidentally ran over three chicks while driving to a nearby plantation. He claimed he was unaware of the incident until he was confronted by their owner.
When he tried to apologise, Jimmy alleged that the man attacked him with a knife before relatives intervened to stop the assault.
He required 30 stitches and spent a week in hospital recovering from a fractured skull and other serious injuries. Jimmy said he continues to experience numbness and memory problems following the attack.
He also believes longstanding tensions between the two families may have contributed to the violence.
Saimai Survive said it intends to assist Jimmy in pursuing legal action over the incident.
Investigations continue
Both cases remain under investigation by Thai authorities.
Police have not released additional details regarding the Bangkok shooting, while the Sisaket assault case is also continuing as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
