POOR DAD EARNS $87/MONTH, CAN’T AFFORD TAXI & BORROWS MONEY TO GO DAUGHTER’S RESULTS CEREMONY

The release of the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) 2022 exam results (equivalent to Singapore’s GCE A-Levels) on Thursday (13 July) brought forth moments of joy and celebration for many students and their families.

One such inspiring story is that of Arnie Jaliusih, a 20-year-old student from SMK Tun Fuad Stephens in Tamparuli, Sabah. Arnie achieved an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.0.

But attending the results announcement ceremony wasn’t easy at all for her family. Her father, Jaliusih Madakol, works as a rubber tapper and had to face financial constraints to ensure their presence at the ceremony, according to Bernama.

Jaliusih couldn’t afford to take a taxi and had to borrow RM120 (S$35) from his neighbors. Jaliusih works as a rubber tapper and his monthly income ranges from RM200 to RM300 (S$58 to S$87).

He only owned a motorcycle and an old car that frequently broke down. The car could only reach Tamparuli town, approximately 30 minutes away from the school. The remaining distance would take another half-hour to cover. Hence, hiring a taxi was the only viable solution.

A Proud Moment Captured

Despite the financial difficulties and the challenges they faced, Arnie Jaliusih’s family triumphed in their mission to witness her achievements.

Arnie spoke to Sinar Harian and said that she didn’t expect to score 4.0 for her GPA, only expecting a maximum of about 3.8 or 3.9, so to receive a GPA of 4.0 was pleasantly surprising for her.

Heartwarming photographs captured the proud moment when Jaliusih smiled proudly at his daughter while she held up her certificate.

Arnie Jaliusih’s ambition extends beyond her academic success. Her aspiration is to become a teacher and make a positive impact on the lives of others.

She is also hoping to continue to pursue her education and help change the lives of her parents.
