A poor elderly man was seen counting his money coin by coin while trying to see if he had enough to buy food.
He was then spotted by activist Gilbert Goh, who gave him a $50 angpao to help him out with his expenses.
Here is what Gilbert said
Spotted a elderly counting his coins and some notes before making his purchase at Chinatown during today’s meals distribution.
We intervened later with our $50 angbao of which he initially refused to accept as it’s too much money.
Such coin-counting scenes are common nowadays as the high cost of living begins to bite at the limited expenses of our elderly poor.
The war at Ukraine currently adds on to the hardships of our elderly who do not have the luxury of saving enough CPF to retire.
If you happen to see a elderly counting his coins carefully to make a meal purchase, why not get him some food or better still pass him a angbao to lighten his load?
