A Chinese national, Zhang Yang, was sentenced to three weeks in jail on May 7, 2025, for molesting a woman at the Serangoon MRT station in Singapore back in 2018. The incident occurred on August 22, when the victim, then 21 years old, was walking along the railway platform.

Details of the Incident

As the woman walked along the platform, Zhang, who was 27 at the time and working as a construction worker in Singapore, forcefully brushed against her groin area with his forearm while passing by. After the initial encounter, the victim moved away to a more crowded area, but Zhang followed her and molested her again shortly thereafter.

When the train arrived, Zhang continued to keep an eye on the victim, boarding the same train as her. Throughout the journey, he repeatedly turned to look at her, causing her to feel unsafe. Seeking assistance, the victim discreetly wrote a note on her phone asking a male commuter for help, explaining that Zhang had touched her and was following her.

After the train ride, Zhang exited the train before the victim, who then reported the incident to the police later that night.

Arrest and Sentencing

Although Zhang left Singapore shortly after the incident due to the expiration of his work permit, he was arrested upon returning to Singapore on March 26, 2025. During his court proceedings, he claimed not to recall the incident, even when shown CCTV footage of the crime.

On May 7, Zhang pleaded guilty to one count of outrage of modesty, with another similar charge taken into consideration for sentencing. He requested a lighter sentence, expressing remorse and citing his responsibilities towards his elderly parents and children. However, the public prosecutor countered that there was no evidence to support his claims of intoxication at the time of the offence, noting that intoxication is generally considered an aggravating factor in such cases.

Public Reaction
