Chinese Tourist Robbed by Transgender Individual in Pattaya Hotel Room After Being Approached on Beach
A Chinese tourist was left shocked and out of pocket after falling victim to a hotel room theft in Pattaya, Thailand — a case that has once again raised alarm bells over tourist safety in the popular seaside city.
The incident reportedly took place late Friday night (19 July), when the tourist, known only as Zhang, was approached by a transgender individual while walking along the bustling Pattaya Beach. Described as being friendly and persistent in engaging conversation, the individual gained Zhang’s trust before suggesting they continue their interaction in a hotel room.
According to Zhang’s account to the police, after they entered the room, he proceeded to take a shower. However, when he stepped out of the bathroom, the transgender person had vanished — along with 20,000 Thai baht (approximately S$735) in cash that was kept in his bag.
Zhang rushed to the nearest police station to lodge a report. Despite prompt action, the suspect had already fled the scene, and investigations are now underway.
Not the First Incident of Its Kind
What’s more concerning is that this is not an isolated event. Thai media highlighted that a similar case involving an Indian tourist had occurred recently under comparable circumstances. In that case too, the suspect remains at large.
These repeated offences are sparking growing concern among both locals and international visitors. There are increasing calls for law enforcement agencies in Pattaya to ramp up efforts in patrolling and surveillance, particularly around high-risk tourist areas like beach fronts, nightlife zones, and hotel corridors.
Safety Concerns May Tarnish Pattaya’s Tourist Image
Incidents like these, although not rampant, cast a shadow over Thailand’s image as a safe haven for global travellers — especially in hotspots like Pattaya which draw millions annually. Tourists are urged to stay cautious when approached by strangers, regardless of how friendly or seemingly harmless they appear.
Local authorities are being pressured to take swift action and improve visibility in tourist-heavy zones, as public confidence hinges not just on catching perpetrators but also in preventing similar incidents from occurring.
With peak travel periods drawing near and Pattaya being a magnet for solo travellers and nightlife seekers, tourist safety is once again under the spotlight.
