PRC Tourist in Egypt Found to Be Part of Gang Kidnapping Fellow PRC Nationals

What was initially reported as a missing tourist case in Egypt has taken a shocking twist. A 21-year-old Chinese woman, previously believed to be missing while travelling in Egypt, has been identified by local authorities as a member of a criminal syndicate accused of abducting Chinese nationals for ransom.

Egyptian Police Arrest Eight Suspects, Including Three Chinese Nationals

The woman, identified as Chi Guanying, had drawn public concern after being reported missing. However, Egypt’s Ministry of Interior later revealed that Chi was among eight individuals arrested in a cyber fraud and kidnapping operation based in Cairo. The group reportedly included three Chinese nationals.

Egyptian authorities detained the suspects in a residential apartment where they uncovered an alarming stash of weapons — including knives, stun guns, firearms, and several mobile phones. Investigations revealed that the syndicate had been luring victims, mostly Chinese citizens, with promises of lucrative overseas job opportunities. Once the victims arrived in Egypt, they were allegedly kidnapped and forced to contact their families to demand ransom money.

Authorities Say ‘Missing’ Woman Was Part of the Fraud Syndicate

Images shared online appeared to confirm Chi’s involvement, as one of the detained women had a tattoo identical to hers. Egyptian media reported that the woman seen in the police photo matched the description of Chi, who had been featured in earlier social media posts about a “missing tourist”.

Egyptian police believe the syndicate targeted their victims strategically, exploiting the desperation of those seeking better job prospects. The group is also suspected of coordinating ransom negotiations using encrypted communication apps to evade law enforcement.

Cyber Fraud and Fake Job Scams on the Rise Globally

This incident adds to the growing global concern over cyber fraud syndicates operating across Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In recent years, criminal networks have been exposed for trapping victims in scam compounds, forcing them to commit online fraud or contact relatives for ransom.

Egypt’s Ministry of Interior stated that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will face prosecution under the country’s anti-organised crime and cyber fraud laws.

The shocking revelation has left many netizens in disbelief, as what appeared to be a tragic missing person case has now been exposed as part of a larger transnational criminal operation targeting Chinese nationals abroad.
