Nail Care Alert: How Improper Manicure Practices Can Cause Infections
Getting a fresh set of nails feels great, but without proper care, the consequences can be painful and even dangerous. A recent report by China’s The Paper, authored by “Aimee’s Health Tips,” highlighted four common nail issues after manicures, analysed by professional dermatologists. The main culprits are fungal, bacterial, and viral infections, often collectively referred to as “manicure diseases.”
Disinfect Tools Properly
The most common issue is nail discoloration—green, yellow, or grey—often accompanied by small bumps around the nails. Green nails, for example, are caused by Pseudomonas bacteria, which thrive when manicure tools are not properly sanitised or when nails are damaged during filing. To reduce risk, choose salons that use disposable tools or thoroughly disinfect instruments. When applying nail tips, semi-adhesive tips are preferable to full-coverage ones to prevent water from getting trapped and causing fungal growth. Nail extensions should be removed or trimmed after 20–30 days, as loose tips can increase infection risk.
Avoid Over-Filing and Aggressive Removal
Over-filing or forceful removal of nail polish or extensions can make nails thin, layered, and prone to minor bleeding. This is common when nail technicians file too aggressively or when clients try to peel off polish themselves. Such practices damage the nail plate, leaving nails sensitive to temperature changes and prone to splitting.
Be Cautious With Nail Trimming
Redness, swelling, or pus around the nails often signals ingrown nails or even nail fold infections (paronychia). This usually occurs when nails are cut too short or filed incorrectly. Experts recommend shaping nails square rather than rounding the edges, and instructing nail technicians not to trim nails excessively.
Avoid Unnecessary Nail Extensions
Long or improperly maintained nail extensions can break easily, causing pain and potential infections. If extensions are used, they should be of moderate length and regularly maintained. Learning basic nail care from trusted sources can help minimise injury and infection risks.
By following proper hygiene, avoiding over-filing, trimming nails correctly, and using extensions cautiously, manicure enthusiasts can enjoy beautiful nails safely without compromising their nail health.
