The Public Transport Council (PTC) has recently announced that they will not be approving any fare adjustment for the year 2020. This is due to the impact of COVID-19 which caused the current economic downturn.
The PTC will continue to monitor the situation to protect the interests of the commuters. Any adjustments that are supposed to be done will be carried forward to the year 2021. Due to the pandemic, the Singapore economy has shrunk by 41.2%. The public transport industry, in particular, felt the pinch after seeing a 75% drop in ridership during the circuit breaker period.
In view of the pandemic, an additional cost was incurred by the public transport operators to ensure that the buses and trains are disinfected on a frequent basis. With that, the PTC still did not give the green light for any fare adjustment.
