Redhill Man Jailed After Returning To Convenience Store With Two Knives Over Straw Dispute
A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to more than six months in jail after allegedly returning to a convenience store in Redhill armed with two knives following a disagreement over a drinking straw.
The incident happened on May 1 and stemmed from what appeared to be a minor dispute that quickly escalated into a serious criminal offence.
According to court proceedings, the man, identified as Wu Zhijian, had purchased a drink from a convenience store but was reportedly denied a straw by the store manager. The refusal led to a heated argument between the pair.
After becoming upset, Wu allegedly scolded the manager before storming out of the shop.
However, the confrontation did not end there.
A short while later, Wu returned to the premises carrying two knives and allegedly threatened the store manager before leaving the scene once again.
Store Manager Alerted Police Immediately
According to Shin Min Daily News, Fearing for his safety, the store manager contacted the police and informed officers that the suspect was believed to be living in a unit located above the shop, reported Shin Min Daily News
Police officers later arrested Wu on the same day.
Although no physical injuries were reported, the case highlighted how a seemingly minor disagreement can quickly turn dangerous when weapons become involved.
Court documents revealed that Wu has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1992.
During sentencing, the judge noted his extensive record and observed that there was a higher risk of him reoffending in the future.
Previous Offences Led To Harsher Sentence
The court also considered that Wu had breached the conditions of a remission order that had been imposed from a previous conviction.
In Singapore, eligible inmates may receive early release under a conditional remission scheme, which allows them to serve part of their sentence in the community, provided they maintain good behaviour and do not commit any new offences during the remission period.
By committing another offence while still under these conditions, Wu violated the terms of his release.
As a result, he was handed a tougher punishment and sentenced to six months and seven days in jail.
The case serves as a reminder that disputes over everyday matters should never escalate into threats or violence, especially when dangerous weapons are involved. Even seemingly trivial disagreements can lead to serious legal consequences when emotions are allowed to spiral out of control.
