Famed Chinese Painter Reported Missing, Wife Suspected of Selling Priceless Artworks
Renowned Chinese calligrapher and painter Fan Zeng, aged 87, has reportedly gone missing, sparking widespread concern after reports suggested his young wife may have sold some of his valuable art collection. Fan, considered one of China’s most respected contemporary artists, married his fourth wife, Xu Meng, last year. The couple’s age gap of over 50 years drew significant attention at the time.
According to sources, Fan’s daughter, Fan Xiaohui, revealed that her father has been out of contact since mid-July. She said Fan left their residence at Bihu Estate with Xu Meng and has not communicated with the family since. The home has reportedly been sealed, with staff claiming that many of Fan’s treasured paintings and antiques were moved, allegedly under Xu Meng’s direction.
Fan Xiaohui stated that during her absence attending a summer programme with her children, she had occasional WeChat contact with her father, who was said to be accompanying Xu Meng at the hospital. However, the situation appeared increasingly suspicious, prompting her to return to China to investigate personally. Upon arrival, she found the estate closed and the household staff largely replaced. Several long-time employees confirmed that numerous valuable paintings and antiques were relocated, though their destination remains unknown.
Allegations of Art Theft and Suspicious Behaviour
The situation has drawn public attention amid rumours that Xu Meng may have been involved in selling part of Fan’s collection with the assistance of other men. Fan Xiaohui emphasised that her primary concern remains her father’s health and safety, urging the public to avoid spreading speculation that could escalate the issue online.
Fan Zeng, originally from Nantong, Jiangsu Province, is recognised for his exceptional skills in figure painting and calligraphy. His works have been acquired by major museums worldwide, and some of his pieces have sold for record-breaking sums at auctions. Among his notable sales, the painting Bamboo and Sparrow reportedly fetched HK$40.55 million (approximately S$7.3 million). Fan’s estimated net worth has been reported at around RMB 1 billion (about S$200 million).
Despite the controversy, Fan’s reputation in the art world remains untarnished. Xu Meng, identified as a media personality and former host with China Traffic Radio, has not publicly responded to the allegations. The family continues efforts to locate Fan and secure his well-being.
Family’s Plea for Privacy
Fan Xiaohui concluded her statement by expressing gratitude for public concern but requested discretion as the family works to ascertain Fan Zeng’s whereabouts. She confirmed ongoing communication with friends close to her father in the hope of ensuring his safety and a prompt resolution to the situation.
