SAF Captain Jailed Five Weeks for Chokehold on Grab Driver After Vomiting Incident

A 34-year-old Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) captain has been sentenced to five weeks in jail after a drunken night ended in violence against a Grab driver. The officer, identified as Ashton Jude Joseph, was found guilty of placing the 46-year-old driver in a chokehold following an argument that arose when Joseph vomited in the vehicle.

The incident took place in the early hours of 30 August 2024. Joseph had been drinking with friends at a bar near Serangoon Road, consuming six to seven pints of beer — equivalent to about three litres. By 3am, he booked a private-hire ride home. According to court records, the driver noticed Joseph was intoxicated and handed him a plastic bag, which Joseph used to vomit into during the journey.

Upon arrival at his destination around 3:30am, the driver alighted to inspect his car and found traces of vomit on the seats and carpet. When he confronted Joseph, an argument broke out. The situation escalated when Joseph grabbed the driver by the neck and applied a chokehold.

Witnesses Stepped In as Altercation Unfolded

The commotion drew the attention of bystanders, including two individuals in a passing van who stopped to help. Joseph ceased the assault as the van approached and attempted to flee the scene. However, he stumbled, injured his nose, and was soon caught. The group returned to the vehicle, and police arrived shortly after the driver made a distress call at 3:40am.

Investigations revealed that Joseph’s blood alcohol level was 124 milligrams per 100 millilitres. The incident was captured on police cameras, offering clear evidence of the assault. Joseph subsequently offered the driver S$500 in compensation along with a written apology, though the case proceeded to sentencing.

Mindef to Review Further Disciplinary Action

The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has stated that the SAF upholds strict discipline standards and will review the case before determining if further disciplinary measures are necessary. While Joseph intends to appeal his sentence, the incident has drawn attention to the dangers of alcohol-related violence and its impact on public safety and road safety.

Joseph’s prior conviction for drink driving in 2016, along with other charges, weighed against him in court. Under Singapore law, voluntarily causing hurt can result in up to three years’ jail, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that come with reckless behaviour after drinking.
