SAF Regular Dies After Being Found Unconscious at Hendon Camp Swimming Pool

A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regular serviceman has died after being discovered unconscious at the Hendon Camp swimming pool early on National Day morning, 9 Aug 2025. According to the Ministry of Defence (Mindef), the serviceman appeared to have been training alone at the time of the incident.

The discovery was made at approximately 7.15am. Immediate life-saving measures were carried out on-site, with personnel administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive him. The quick medical response highlights the SAF’s emergency preparedness protocols for training-related incidents.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were swiftly activated. The injured serviceman was transported to Changi General Hospital in an SCDF ambulance, with resuscitation efforts continuing en route.

Efforts to Save the Serviceman Unsuccessful

Mindef stated that resuscitation attempts persisted upon arrival at the hospital. Despite the continued efforts of medical professionals, the serviceman was pronounced dead at 7.44am, less than half an hour after he was first found unconscious.

The incident has raised concerns about SAF training safety protocols, particularly during unsupervised sessions. While the SAF maintains strict guidelines for physical training, incidents in aquatic environments remain rare but carry high risks if emergencies occur unnoticed.

In its statement, Mindef expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “The Ministry of Defence and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late serviceman. We are also rendering assistance to the family during this time of grief,” it said.

Support for the Family and Ongoing Investigations

Mindef has confirmed that it is working closely with the family to provide both emotional and logistical support during this difficult period. Such assistance typically includes help with administrative matters, financial support, and arrangements for military funeral honours.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the serviceman’s collapse. This includes reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing personnel present at the camp, and examining whether environmental or health-related factors played a role.

The SAF has reiterated its commitment to ensuring training safety for all servicemen, emphasising that any lessons from this tragedy will be used to strengthen protocols and prevent future incidents.
