A Facebook user has shared a story about her sister internship with a local company in Singapore on NUSWhisper Facebook page.
According to her, the company had abused their interns and only give them one day off per week. It is said that the company did not have any full-timers and they had exploited part-timers to keep the company running.
She then mentioned that her sister was recently requested by her boss to work on her off days. When her sister asked for another day to replace her off day, her boss scolded her and told her that she was spoiled and pampered.
Full Story Here:
“Submitting this on behalf of my sis here. She is on her poly internship and tbh, the company is low key abusing their interns. They get one day off per week and even on that day, they are expected to do work at home. When I heard more about this company, I am more certain of that. They don’t have a single full-timer, they exploit these young part-timers. My sister was promised Christmas and New Years Eve off only for the boss to go back on his word and make her come in for work.
Her boss recently arranged for her to come in for work on her off day this week (Monday) and she requested to have Tuesday off instead since they had nothing planned for her and she was told off, scolded for being pampered and spoilt? She isn’t paid for OT either. She works from 10 am and doesn’t get home sometimes until 9 pm.
My sis is afraid of complaining but I feel bad for her. She is afraid that if she complains, her evaluations would be affected and that could pull down her grades. The other interns are treated similarly and I wish we could do something so the poly would stop sending students to a place that exploit these students. There isn’t a labour law protecting interns, but I wonder if there is anywhere we can feedback to solve something like this? (My parents are planning to submit a letter after her evaluations are fixed but would that be ignored?)
Or is this completely normal?”
