S’pore Man Sees Dad Attacked With Umbrella, Shoves 78-Year-Old ‘Rival’ Who Dies 2 Days Later
A 37-year-old Singaporean man has been sentenced to nine months in jail after pushing a 78-year-old man who had allegedly attacked his father with an umbrella.
The older man fell onto the pavement during the confrontation and suffered severe head injuries. He was taken to hospital but died two days later.
The incident happened on 25 May 2025 at about 8.47am near the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Wolskel Road. The accused, identified as Ye Fu Long, was out with his family when the confrontation occurred. (联合早报)
78-Year-Old Allegedly Attacked Man’s Father With Umbrella
According to court proceedings, the deceased, 78-year-old Wu Jin Ying, had a history of disputes with the accused’s father.
While the accused and his family were passing through the area, Wu allegedly approached from behind the accused’s father and struck him on the head with an umbrella.
Seeing his father being attacked, Ye immediately intervened.
He grabbed Wu and pushed him forcefully towards the pavement. Wu fell during the incident, with his head striking the ground.
The accused’s sister subsequently called the police after seeing what had happened. The confrontation was also captured by the dashboard camera of a passing vehicle, according to the court proceedings. (联合早报)
Victim Suffered Severe Brain Injuries
Wu was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital following the incident.
He was reportedly unconscious when he arrived at the hospital. A CT scan showed that he had suffered acute intracranial bleeding and extensive skull fractures.
He remained in a coma while receiving treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Wu died at about 2.06pm on 27 May, approximately two days after the confrontation. An autopsy determined that his death was caused by the head injuries he sustained. (联合早报)
Man Sentenced To Nine Months’ Jail
Ye admitted to one charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment on the morning of 27 August 2026.
The case highlights how a confrontation between people with an existing dispute escalated within moments, with the physical intervention ultimately resulting in fatal consequences.
Although the accused had intervened after seeing his father allegedly being attacked first, the force used during the confrontation resulted in the older man falling and suffering catastrophic injuries.
The available court report does not indicate that the accused intended to cause the man’s death. His conviction was instead for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, for which he received the nine-month jail sentence. (联合早报)
