58-year-old K. Santhi A. Krishnasamy, who was earlier convicted of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant and using criminal force on a public servant, was sentenced to 18 weeks imprisonment on Friday (25 August).
She had attacked a Central Manpower Base (CMPB) officer who visited her home after her son failed to show up for his national service (NS), according to The Straits Times.
During her sentencing, she also repeatedly interrupted District Judge Christopher Goh when he was delivering the reasons for his sentence, and he ended up having to raise his voice.
While he was explaining, Santhi interrupted him and said “all of it is not true,” and the judge then told her to “keep quiet and let me finish”.
He also pointed out how Santhi displayed no remorse at all for her offences.
What happened?
On that fateful day, K Santhi’s son, Mr Kavinsarang Shin, failed to appear for enlistment at the Basic Military Training Centre Headquarters at Pulau Tekong Besar.
Three Central Manpower Base (CMPB) enlistment inspectors arrived at K Santhi’s residence to serve an order for her son to report to CMPB. The order was intended to facilitate investigations into an offense under the Enlistment Act.
Officer Ang Wei Cong read out the order to her son, Kavinsarang Shin, about his failure to show up for NS and served him the order to report to CMPB to assist in investigations.
Santhi then stepped in and refused to accept the order from the officers, before writing on the order and calling it a “falsehood” before demanding the officers take the order back, but the officers refused to take the order back and left for the lift lobby.
Santhi then grabbed the wrist of one of the inspectors, Adeline Joyce Neubronner, who then cried out in pain.
The third officer, Vincent Lee Sian Fung, then tried to get Santhi to release her grip on Adeline but the former refused to budge.
Santhi also grabbed Ang’s body camera and threw it onto the ground, before kicking it away, before Ang then armlocked Santhi to neutralise her and stop her from causing more harm.
Santhi’s husband then arrived and Ang told him to control his wife while Lee called the police.
During the assault, Adeline suffered abrasions on her arms and sprained her right shoulder, and she testified in court that she was traumatised by the incident.
