A video circulating online has sparked criticism after it allegedly showed an e-bike rider committing several traffic and safety offences within a short stretch of road in western Singapore.
The footage, uploaded by SG Road Vigilante (SGRV), was reportedly recorded at around 6:40pm on July 20 along Corporation Road. The rider was seen travelling on an e-bike while apparently vaping, without wearing a helmet, before proceeding through a red traffic light.
The incident did not end there, as the rider was also filmed overtaking a heavy vehicle from the left, a manoeuvre widely regarded as one of the most dangerous situations for cyclists and personal mobility device users due to the large blind spots around lorries and tipper trucks.
Multiple Alleged Offences Captured On Camera
According to the video description, the rider appeared to have breached several traffic rules in a matter of seconds. Besides allegedly running the red light and riding without a helmet, the individual was also seen holding what appeared to be a vape device while operating the e-bike.
Singapore maintains a strict ban on electronic vaporisers and e-cigarettes. Under local laws, the purchase, possession and use of vape devices are prohibited, with offenders facing fines of up to S$2,000 for possession or use. Harsher penalties may apply for those involved in importing or distributing such devices.
Should the authorities identify the rider, the video could potentially be used as part of investigations into the alleged offences.
Netizens Call For Authorities To Take Action
The video attracted numerous comments from viewers, many of whom expressed concern over the rider’s behaviour.
Several commenters urged the Traffic Police, Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) to investigate the incident, suggesting that Singapore’s extensive CCTV and traffic camera network could help identify the individual.
Others remarked that overtaking a heavy vehicle from the left could have easily resulted in a fatal accident, noting that such vehicles have significant blind spots that make it difficult for drivers to spot cyclists or e-bike riders travelling alongside them.
Some also questioned whether enforcement against errant e-bike and PMD riders should be stepped up, while others suggested that food delivery platforms should ensure their riders comply with traffic regulations if they are using e-bikes for work.
No injuries were reported in relation to the incident, and it is not known whether any enforcement action has been taken at the time of writing.
