A 51-year-old police superintendent in Singapore, Chan Hee Keong, has been charged with multiple offenses, including drink driving, following an incident that occurred in February 2024. The charges were formally presented in court on February 6, 2025, after Chan allegedly exhibited dangerous driving behavior along Tampines Avenue 5.
According to reports, Chan was driving at a speed of 93 km/h in a zone where the speed limit is set at 70 km/h. Witnesses claim that he was weaving in and out of lanes and nearly collided with another vehicle. The incident reportedly took place around 11:40 PM on February 23, 2024, when Chan was said to have stopped his car for an extended period at a junction near Bedok North Street 1, causing inconvenience to other road users.
An hour later, he was accused of further reckless driving along Tampines Avenue 5, where he continued to exceed the speed limit. The following morning, on February 24, Chan allegedly stopped his vehicle along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) towards Tuas, again causing disruption to traffic.
Authorities conducted a breathalyzer test, which revealed that Chan had a blood alcohol level of 67 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath, nearly double the legal limit for drivers in Singapore.
In response to the incident, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) stated that they promptly initiated an investigation once the matter was reported. The SPF emphasized that officers are expected to uphold the law and maintain high standards of conduct, and they will take appropriate action against any officer who violates the law, including court charges.
Chan is scheduled to return to court in March for further proceedings. The case has raised concerns about accountability within the police force, particularly regarding the conduct of officers who are expected to enforce the law. As the legal process unfolds, the SPF has refrained from commenting further, citing the ongoing nature of the court proceedings.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the consequences of violating traffic laws, especially for those in positions of authority. The community will be watching closely as the case progresses, hoping for a resolution that underscores the commitment to road safety and accountability.
