Singapore Temperatures Dip To 21.1°C Amid Intense Northeast Monsoon Showers

Singapore experienced one of its coolest evenings of the year as temperatures fell to as low as 21.1°C on Feb 19, following hours of steady and heavy rainfall across the island.

Weather data released by the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) showed that the cooler conditions were recorded at around 9pm. The dip marks one of the lowest temperature readings seen so far in 2026, offering residents a rare break from the usual tropical heat.

Many Singaporeans took to social media to remark that air-conditioning was unnecessary, with some even opting for light jackets as rain continued into the night.

Cool Conditions Recorded Across Multiple Areas

According to regional readings published by MSS, temperatures hovered at or below 21.5°C in several western parts of the island. Jurong Island registered about 21.4°C, while areas in Jurong West recorded approximately 21.5°C.

Elsewhere, temperatures remained similarly mild. Even at Semakau Island, which recorded the highest temperature among reporting stations that evening, the mercury stood at just 23.3°C as of around 9.30pm.

Such islandwide cooling is relatively uncommon in Singapore’s equatorial climate, where average daily temperatures typically range between 25°C and 31°C. Extended periods below 22°C are usually associated with strong monsoon surges and persistent rainfall.

Heavy Rainfall Drives Cooling Effect

MSS attributed the cooler weather to the prevailing northeast monsoon, which is currently in an active wet phase. During this period, rain bands can bring prolonged and widespread showers, accompanied by gusty winds and overcast skies.

On Feb 19, heavy and sustained rainfall blanketed large parts of the island. Clementi recorded the highest localised rainfall accumulation, with 116.4mm measured over the course of the downpour.

The combination of thick cloud cover, evaporative cooling from rain and reduced solar heating contributed to the noticeable drop in temperature.

While some residents welcomed the cooler air as a respite from high electricity bills and rising air-conditioning usage, motorists and commuters faced slower traffic conditions due to waterlogged roads and reduced visibility.

MSS has advised that similar wet and windy conditions may persist as long as the northeast monsoon remains active. Members of the public are encouraged to monitor official forecasts and weather advisories, particularly if planning outdoor activities.

For now, many are making the most of the refreshing temperatures — a rare treat in Singapore’s typically warm and humid climate.
