Singapore commuters will soon have three additional MRT stations to look forward to, with Bedok South, Xilin and Sungei Bedok scheduled to open on Dec. 26, 2026.
Transport Minister and Second Minister for Finance Jeffrey Siow announced the opening date during his speech at Singapore Urban Mobility Week on Nov. 4.
The three stations will expand the rail network in eastern Singapore, with the new infrastructure expected to provide residents with more convenient connections and shorter travelling times.
The opening will also mark an important development in Singapore’s ongoing efforts to improve public transport connectivity across the island.
Three new MRT stations in eastern Singapore
The upcoming stations are Bedok South and Sungei Bedok on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), as well as Xilin on the Downtown Line (DTL).
Sungei Bedok will serve as an interchange station connecting the two MRT lines, allowing commuters to transfer between them without having to travel to another interchange elsewhere.
The three stations will strengthen connections between two major rail corridors and provide residents in eastern Singapore with additional commuting options.
For people living around Bedok South, Xilin and nearby neighbourhoods, the new stations are expected to improve access to the wider MRT network.
More convenient connections for eastern residents
The new MRT stations are expected to benefit commuters travelling between eastern Singapore and other parts of the island.
The interchange at Sungei Bedok will be particularly important as it connects the Thomson-East Coast Line with the Downtown Line.
This will give commuters additional route options when travelling towards destinations served by either line.
With more stations becoming operational, residents may also find it easier to access employment centres, shopping areas and other amenities without relying entirely on buses or private transport.
Jurong Region Line expected in mid-2028
Beyond the upcoming eastern expansion, Singapore is also preparing for the opening of the Jurong Region Line (JRL).
According to Siow, the new line is expected to begin operations in mid-2028.
The JRL will improve rail connectivity for residents in western Singapore, providing more direct access to the existing MRT network.
The development is expected to reduce the need for some commuters to depend on feeder buses when travelling between neighbourhoods and major transport connections.
Meanwhile, the Cross Island Line (CRL) is scheduled for completion in the 2030s.
The upcoming rail projects form part of Singapore’s longer-term plans to expand its public transport infrastructure and improve connectivity between residential areas, commercial centres and employment hubs.
Singapore’s rail network continues to expand
Singapore currently has an urban rail network spanning approximately 275km across eight lines, according to Siow.
The continued expansion of the MRT system is intended to provide commuters with more alternatives to driving, while improving accessibility across different parts of the island.
With three additional stations opening in December, residents in eastern Singapore will soon have more options for their daily journeys.
Commuters should look out for further announcements on station facilities, train services and operational arrangements ahead of the opening.
