Singaporean Man and Malaysian Ride-Hailing Driver Killed in Johor Bahru Crash

A 27-year-old Singaporean man and his 48-year-old Malaysian ride-hailing driver tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Sunday morning in Johor Bahru. The collision took place at around 11:27am when their vehicle reportedly crashed into a lorry while travelling along the route from Johor Bahru to Skudai.

Photos and videos of the crash’s aftermath have since surfaced online, painting a grim picture of the incident. Emergency responders, including Malaysia’s Fire and Rescue Department, were at the scene shortly after the accident was reported.

Driver Died on the Spot, Passenger Succumbed in Hospital

The victims were travelling in a Perodua Bezza when the vehicle allegedly lost control and slammed into a Mitsubishi Fuso lorry. Malaysian authorities stated that the impact caused the ride-hailing driver to suffer fatal head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Singaporean passenger, however, was rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries while receiving care. His identity has not been publicly released.

According to preliminary reports, the lorry involved in the crash was being used for tree-watering operations. Fortunately, the 28-year-old lorry driver was unharmed.

Crash Investigated for Reckless Driving

Investigations into the accident are ongoing, with local police probing the case under suspicion of reckless and dangerous driving leading to death. Authorities have yet to confirm if speed, fatigue, or other contributing factors were involved.

Eyewitness videos that have circulated online suggest the car may have rear-ended the lorry. This is consistent with the positioning of both vehicles captured in footage shared by local security groups on Facebook.

This tragic case serves as a reminder for all travellers and motorists—whether in Singapore or across the Causeway—to always prioritise road safety, especially when relying on ride-hailing services in a foreign country.

Cross-Border Travel and Road Safety Risks

With thousands of Singaporeans crossing into Johor Bahru daily for leisure, shopping or family visits, road incidents like these underscore the importance of exercising caution when engaging private transport services. Travellers are advised to wear seatbelts at all times and to ensure that the vehicles they ride in are roadworthy and operated by licensed, experienced drivers.

As the investigation continues, both Singaporean and Malaysian authorities are expected to collaborate closely, particularly since a Singaporean citizen is among the deceased. Updates are likely in the coming days once formal identification and post-mortem procedures are completed.
