From 1 July 2022, there will be more places in Singapore coming under smoking prohibition, as said by Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor today (7 Mar).
Places where smoking will be banned
All public parks and gardens in Singapore which have yet to come under the ban will come under the ban on 1 Jul.
These places includes East Coast Park and Fort Canning Park.
Apart from all parks and gardens, 10 beaches in Singapore and all Active, Beautiful and Clean (ABC) sites will also fall into the prohibition zone.
ABC sites refers to water sites such as:
- Kallang River
- Alexandra Canal
- Bedok Reservoir
as well as all canals and landmarks near these rivers.
The 10 beaches included are:
- Changi Beach
- East Coast Beach
- West Coast Beach
- Sembawang Beach
- Pasir Ris Beach
- Punggol Beach
- Beaches on Coney Island
- Siloso Beach (Sentosa)
- Tanjong Beach (Sentosa)
- Palawan Beach (Sentosa)
Three month period for advisory before enforcement comes into play
To get the public used to the changes, there will be a three month advisory period before enforcement action kicks in.
The advisory period will last from July 2022 to September 2022.
Once the month of October arrives, enforcement action against offenders will begin where they may be fined $200 or up to $1,000 if they were to be brought to court.
No plans to set up additional non smoking zones
Ms Amy Khor also said that there are no plans for additional non smoking zones as setting up these zones will require additional resources for implementation such as planning by the Government to set up zones which are designated for smoking.
