A video previously emerged online showing white smoke appearing inside an MRT carriage, and the commuters ended up having to alight at Kembangan MRT Station.
The video, uploaded by TikTok user @askfar_, showed some of the passengers inside the cabin getting up from their seats and looking at the smoke.
The netizen also shared that there was a burning smell detected inside the train, and a staff member was also seen in the video clearing out the cabin.
The president of SMRT Trains, Lam Sheau Kai, released a statement saying that on 20 May, at around 5pm, smoke was seen coming out of a car of a train that was heading west, at Kembangan MRT Station.
The station staff guided the commuters to disembark from the affected train and board the next one.
Lam added that their staff didn’t receive any reports of commuters who needed medical attention, and that the affected train was then withdrawn from service for further checks.
The cause of the smoke was later revealed to be a leaking air-conditioning compressor, that was leaking “Freon” gas.
