South Korean Sergeant Jailed 30 Years After Bedridden Wife Found Covered In Maggots Before Death

A South Korean military court has sentenced an army staff sergeant to 30 years in prison after finding him guilty of causing his wife’s death through prolonged neglect, in a case that shocked the nation and horrified medical professionals.

The court heard that the woman, who was in her 30s, had been left bedridden for months without proper care, eventually developing severe infections and extensive wounds that became infested with maggots while she was still alive.

Medical experts who later treated the victim described the conditions as among the worst they had encountered during their careers.

Woman Reportedly Left Without Proper Medical Care For Months

According to court proceedings, the victim became bedridden after developing serious mental health conditions, including depression and panic disorder.

Despite her deteriorating condition, prosecutors said she received little to no medical treatment over a period of more than three months.

The woman reportedly survived mainly on snacks, bread and juice while remaining confined indoors.

As her condition worsened, untreated pressure sores developed and eventually progressed into severe tissue damage and infection.

Emergency services were only contacted after the woman began losing consciousness.

By the time responders arrived, they discovered her in an extremely poor state of hygiene and physical condition.

Doctors Horrified By What They Found

Medical personnel testified that the victim’s body was covered with large numbers of maggots when she arrived at hospital.

One attending doctor told the court that healthcare workers initially attempted to remove the insects before transferring her for treatment.

However, the infestation was reportedly so extensive that medical staff struggled to completely remove them.

The woman suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital and later died from sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to infection.

A forensic pathologist testified that it was only the second time in 15 years that he had encountered a living person with such an advanced maggot infestation.

The court also heard evidence contradicting claims that the husband was unaware of the severity of his wife’s condition.

Medical professionals stated that the smell associated with her untreated wounds and decaying tissue would have been impossible to ignore.

Court Rejects Husband’s Defence

Throughout the proceedings, the sergeant reportedly denied criminal responsibility and claimed he did not realise how critically ill his wife had become.

He also alleged that she did not wish to receive medical treatment.

The court ultimately rejected those arguments.

Judges concluded that the neglect had continued for such a prolonged period that her death was entirely foreseeable and preventable.

The military court further noted that the accused continued to offer explanations that lacked credibility and showed little genuine remorse for the consequences of his actions.

As a result, he was convicted and sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment.

Family Demands Greater Punishment

The victim’s relatives reportedly became emotional during the trial and attempted to confront the accused in court before being restrained by security personnel.

Family members later stated that they were angered by what they perceived as a lack of remorse throughout the proceedings.

Meanwhile, military prosecutors have announced plans to appeal the sentence, arguing that an even harsher punishment should have been imposed given the severity of the case.

The disturbing incident has sparked widespread discussion in South Korea about caregiver responsibilities, domestic neglect and the importance of seeking medical assistance when vulnerable family members are unable to care for themselves.
