The SBF’s call was made in a Facebook post on May 19, stating that NewJeansNim’s act of wearing monk’s robes for performances is against the Vinaya, or Monks’ Rule. The Vinaya rules are stipulations and advice that guide the Buddhist community of monks and nuns.
NewJeansNim, whose real name is Yoon Seong Ho, had previously faced controversy over his performances in Malaysia, which were cancelled after authorities deemed them inappropriate. His onstage persona and cherry-picking of Buddhist influences have divided people, with some arguing that he is making a mockery of Buddhism.
Moreover, NewJeansNim is not an ordained monk and had only adopted his name, an amalgam of the K-pop girl group NewJeans and the Korean title for Buddhist monks or nuns, about a year ago.
The Buddhist community in Singapore has also expressed concerns over NewJeansNim’s performance, with the possibility of organizing a press conference to address the issue. The community believes that the feelings of Buddhists in Singapore should be respected.
Previously, NewJeansNim was presented with prayer beads and a headset by the head of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, who claimed that he was aiding in the advance of “young Buddhism”. The Jogye Order is the largest Buddhist sect in South Korea, according to the Korean Times.
In conclusion, the SBF’s call to reject the permits for NewJeansNim’s performance in Singapore is a stand against the disrespect and mockery of Buddhism. The Vinaya rules, which guide the Buddhist community, should be upheld and respected, and the feelings of Buddhists in Singapore should be taken into consideration.
