S’PORE EATERIES ALLEGEDLY FORGED HALAL CERTS, DISCOVERED BY MUIS & REPORTED TO POLICE

In a recent development, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has taken a significant step by referring a case involving the falsification of halal certification to the Singapore Police Force.

This case revolves around two eateries – Kak Mah Chicken and Joy Lap’s Kitchen – that have been allegedly selling products without the legitimate Muis Halal Certification Mark (MHCM).

The Issue at Hand

Upon conducting an inspection, Muis discovered that the halal certificates displayed at Kak Mah Chicken and Joy Lap’s Kitchen were, in fact, fraudulent.

The certificates bore the signature of the previous Mufti, leading to suspicions of their authenticity. A Mufti is a knowledgeable Muslim legal expert responsible for making decisions based on religious laws.

It’s important to note that the previous Mufti of Singapore, Mohamad Fatris Bakaram, had previously retired back in 2020, and the current Mufti is Nazirudin Mohd Nasir.

Validity of Halal Certificates

Halal certificates play a pivotal role in ensuring the compliance of food establishments with Islamic dietary laws. These certificates are typically valid for a period of one to two years, necessitating renewal at least three months before expiration.

In the case of Kak Mah Chicken and Joy Lap’s Kitchen, the allegedly forged halal certificates were set to expire on November 30, 2025.

MUIS’s statement on Facebook

Muis is aware of the circulation on social media of Muis Halal certificates purportedly issued to Kak Mah Chicken and Joy Lap’s Kitchen. The certificates are obvious forgeries, supposedly bearing the signature of the previous Mufti.

Muis has visited the premises mentioned in the halal certificates and found no products bearing Muis Halal Certification Mark (MHCM) offered for sale. We take such incidences very seriously and have referred the matter to the Singapore Police Force.

Muslim consumers who wish to verify the status of an eating establishment, central kitchen or caterer may check the online listing found at www.halal.sg or MuslimSG app Makan Places.
