A young girl from Singapore gained recognition and made it onto the cover of the lifestyle section of The Straits Times (ST) newspaper.
Surprisingly, instead of being cherished by her loved ones for this remarkable achievement, the newspaper ended up serving an entirely different role.
In a TikTok video, the girl captured her elderly grandfather using the newspaper as a placemat while eating fruits. Not only that, but he also employed it for various tasks around the house, such as using it to swat and kill insects.
The owner of Plop Apparels, a vintage clothing shop located in Haji Lane, was featured in The Straits Times due to her flourishing fashion label tailored to the younger generation.
Alongside having an article dedicated to her, she also graced the cover of the newspaper’s lifestyle section. It’s undoubtedly an impressive feat.
However, the girl’s grandfather perceived the newspaper differently. In her video, she recorded him casually using it as a surface for enjoying longans.
In Asian households, newspapers often serve as placemats to maintain cleanliness while eating such fruits. Amusingly, the grandfather discarded the longan skin right on the picture of his granddaughter.
The video then captures him utilizing the newspaper to strike an object on the wall, presumably attempting to eliminate an insect.
His Cantonese profanity towards the unseen pest can be heard in the background. Subsequently, he crumples up the newspaper and uses it to wipe a glass door.
The comical scene entertained numerous netizens on TikTok. Many expressed their fondness for the girl’s grandfather, finding his behaviour endearing. Some even pointed out that, at least, he utilized the newspaper for “useful” purposes.
