S’PORE HDB RUBBISH CHUTE A RELIC OF COCKROACH PARADISE

Old HDB flats are equipped with an indoor rubbish chute within each unit. Although it is convenient to throw rubbish it is a nightmare during fumigation.

When fumigation is conducted, the cockroaches will escape into the units and get infested with cockroaches.

Here are solutions shared by netizens:

  • I gave up on it so it’s permanently sealed with tape. We bag our trash and throw downstairs.
  • Faced the same issue and managed to solve it with the help of my contractor (my house was newly renovated that time). The problem is with the design of the door. The door is made of 2 pieces of metal (hollow in between). To prevent this from happening, u need to open the chute door and fill up that hollow part(contactor used newspaper and sealed with silicon i think) so the bugs have no chance to crawl up to the handle part from inside. 5 years now, not a single cockroach came from there. I hope this will help many of you out there with this type of chute door.
  • Change to those magnetic sealed type chute door/frame. Those latch type will have gaps in between the door and frame.
  • Lucky my aunt house level 1 the rubbish chute door was sealed tight. No cockroach got thru. Her windows is also sealed tight. The only place it got thru is the drain.
  • Just buy the gasket from AliExpress or Lazada…but may have to also apply better rubber adhesive.
  • I did my reno this year and double-sealed my (brand new) chute with masking tape. I don’t use my chute at all and head down to throw my rubbish daily. Once you get into the habit, it’s very easy. I’ve never had any cockroaches in my home.
  • Replace with new door with contractor guarantee. OR open the door, look at the area around the latch, find gaps and seal with silicone. Where there is gap in the latch, seal with grease.
