46-year-old Singaporean inmate, Tangaraju s/o Suppiah, is set to be executed next Wednesday (26 April) for allegedly drug trafficking offences.
He was previously convicted back in 2017 of abetting an attempt to traffic drugs into Singapore and sentenced to death because of the large amount of drugs involved.
His execution, where he will be hanged to death under Singapore law, is scheduled for next Wednesday, 6 years after his conviction.
During the first hearing into his case, he was found guilty of conspiring with “Suresh” his childhood friend and another man named “Mogan” to traffic about 1017.9 grams of cannabis into Singapore.
Mogan, at the time of the offences, was given two phone numbers that he contacted very often before being arrested, and it was later found that the two phone numbers belongs to Suppiah.
Suppiah claimed that the first number had “nothing to do” with him and added that his phone that bore the second phone number was lost.
He was eventually found guilty, and the judge found that the amount of drugs involved had far exceeded the amount consumed by a typical drug addict, and concluded that the drugs were meant for trafficking and not personal consumption.
He was ultimately sentenced to death, with the amount of drugs involved being twice the amount required for the death penalty.
Suppiah then applied for his case to be reviewed in December last year, citing a change in the law, but it was dismissed by the Court of Appeal who said that there was a failure to provide any legitimate basis for his case to be reviewed.
Local activist Kokila Annamalai said in a statement yesterday that she had received the news that Suppiah was set to be executed next Wednesday from his sister, who was at a “complete loss as to what to do”.
