The Singapore Police Force issued a statement on their Facebook about their use of force in Incident Management, with the media being invited to experience a full day of training to understand how officers are trained.
Here is what they said
POLICE USE OF FORCE IN INCIDENT MANAGEMENT
On 19 May 2022, the media were invited to experience a full day of training in Home Team Academy to gain a deeper understanding of how police officers are trained in the use of force to handle different kind of scenarios, which include unarmed contact tactics, baton, Taser and firearms.
After going through condensed trainings and various mock-up scenarios (albeit in a controlled environment), they were put in the shoes of officers, to face a few possible situations on the ground requiring their assessment to the appropriate use of force in order to resolve the situation safely.
There are a range and combination of factors to consider, such as the proportionality of the force versus the perceived threat, safety of members of the public and fellow officers, and safety of subject, in which police officers will apply force. Officers may have to draw their firearms when faced with an imminent threat of grievous hurt or death. Police officers often put their safety and lives on the line every day, to intervene in a crime in progress or protect the public.
However, in spite of the unknown challenges and potentially precarious situations, the Police stay committed to serve the community and protect life and property.
